Covering 26,000 acres with an estimated 20 million trees the Royal Forest of Dean has been a protected since the Norman conquest in 1066 as a kings hunting ground and a key source of Oak for naval shipbuilding. Pumping Station Holidays is situated within the Forest giving easy access to local woodland for walking and cycling.

Surrounding the Pumping Station are several woodlands. 

Chestnut Wood as it name suggests includes many Sweet Chestnuts that can be collected from the Forest floor in November but also Oak, Ash, Rowan and many other hardwoods. Set on the hill overlooking the River Severn. 


Flaxley Wood runs behind Flaxley Abbey and includes  Hope Wood. Wels

West of the Pumping Station is Edge Hill Plantation that gives access to extensive views towards May Hill.

The Pumping Station was built in 1877 to provide water to the East Dean originally using steam pumps. Nearby is St Anthony's Well which has provided water for hundreds of  years is still visited by many people. Local Water Mills and were used for power. Underground iron ore was extracted and processed at Gunns Mill. Limestone was quarried

The Pumping Station was built in 1877 to provide water to the East Dean originally using steam pumps. Nearby is St Anthony's Well which has provided water for hundreds of  years is still visited by many people. Local Water Mills and were used for power. Underground iron ore was extracted and processed at Gunns Mill. Limestone was quarried for building stone. The remains of local Lime Kilns used to extract lime are still in place.
